- Fire SafetyTips

Their are just a few fire safety tips that you should memorize and know in case you ever find your self or your family in a dangerous situation because of a fire in your home.

In the panic of an emergency, some people forget to dial 911 or assume that someone else has done it.  If you are alone at home get to the phone and dial 911 and if you are with your parents, ask them if they had called for help.

Know about 911

  • the number to call in an emergency is 911 - ask an adult to show you how to dial 911 on your phone - but remember not to call unless it's a real emergency.
  • In a real emergency, such as a fire, this is what will happen if you call 911:
    • The telephone operator will ask you if you need police, fire or ambulance assistance
    • If you say fire, you will be connected to the fire service - so wait on the phone and a different operator will ask you what the emergency is - be ready to tell the operator a house fire, car fire or outdoor fire
    • You will then be asked for the address of the fire - including the house number, street name, suburb and town
    • Tell the operator if you think anyone is hurt
    • Wait for the operator to hang up before you do
    • Get out of the house or area and wait for the firefighters to arrive

Get Down Low and Go

  • If your house is smoky from a fire, it will be hard to see and breath and you will start coughing and choking.
  • Because smoke rises to the ceiling, the best thing to do is GET DOWN LOW AND - crawl along the ground to the nearest exit and make meet your family outside.  Ask you parents if they have a place that they would like to meet if a fire emergency happens at your house.
  • Wait outside for firefighters to arrive - never go back inside a burning house.

Stop Drop & Roll

  • If your clothes catch on fire, don't run away - this will only make the fire burn hotter and faster. Instead:
    • STOP immediately where you are
    • DROP quickly to ground and cover your face with your hands
    • ROLL over and over to put out the flames

Good Fires / Bad Fires

  • Fire is a normal part of our lives, but there is a difference between good and bad fires.
  • Good fires are fires such as birthday candles, fireplaces, BBQ's and camp fires.
  • Bad fires are fires such as house fires, bush fires and children playing with fire.
  • Sometimes good fires can turn bad if there's not an adult around. Make sure you never play with fire and if you find matches or lighters always give them to your parents.

Firefighters are your friends and our heroes

  • When firefighters are wearing their fire clothes, called turnout gear, they look very big. They also have masks over their faces that make them look and sound frightening. They have to wear this gear to protect them from the fire so don't be afraid of them - they are there to help you.
  • If you get caught in a fire, it's important that you don't hide from the firefighters - let them know where you are.
