"All-Risk"
Fire Agency.
The Fairview Fire
Protect District is designated as an "all-risk" co-ordination
center providing support in response to emergencies
such as fire, emergency medical, floods, hurricanes,
earthquakes, etc. If
you drive by the Fairview fire station, you see an
impressive facility with two fire engines poised behind the
roll up doors.
Our engine company staff is
able to respond to and handle most routine emergency events.
Over 50% of our emergency calls are medical in nature.
Our employees are trained to the emergency medical
technician (EMT) and paramedic levels.
When
someone calls 911, the call is handled through a highly
automated computer aided dispatch system, which sends the
nearest available fire engine. If the problem is a medical
emergency, an ambulance will also be sent. In the event of a
structure fire, two fire engines and a truck will normally
be dispatched. Fire engines carry a hose, a water tank, and
a pump, which is usually capable of pumping 2,000 gallons of
water per minute. Fire trucks carry ladders and specialized
rescue equipment. If the incident is very large, resources
will be called in from surrounding jurisdictions, through
mutual aid agreements, wherein fire departments assist each
other.
Why is this information important?
You should know the staffing and capabilities of your fire
department. On subsequent pages our website you will
find many details about FFPD's Services, what to do if you
have an emergency and what we do if you call on us to assist
you in an emergency.
Preparedness is critical! Having a family or
business
emergency plan is also imperative.
In the event of a major disaster, such as an
earthquake, large wildfire, or act of terrorism,
firefighters may be overwhelmed by the large numbers of
needs for assistance, and may be unable to reach you
immediately. Roads may be rendered temporarily impassable
by damage to the surface or blocked by downed trees, etc.
For these reasons, you should be able to take care of
yourself and your family for up to 72 hours. Our Community
Emergency Response Team (CERT) program, offered in
conjunction with the City of Hayward, can help you learn how
to protect your family and neighborhood in such an
emergency.
The Fairview Fire Protection District staff is proud to
provide our community the following services:

Emergency
Medical Services.
The Fairview Fire Protection District provides an
outstanding level of Emergency Medical Services (EMS). The
engines at Fire Stations 8 and 9 have at least one Paramedic
on duty at all times. Because of the City of Hayward, the
District's current contract service provider has been hiring
only Paramedic trained Firefighters from many years, there
are frequently two Paramedics on each of the vehicles, and
all-Paramedic crews are becoming more common. The District's
ALS services are overseen by a registered nurse.
Auto
Accident / Rescue.
Current research
and the experience of emergency physicians, trauma
specialists and other EMS providers recognize that trauma
patients in an automobile accident or rescue situation have
the best outcomes are when patients are transported and
cared for at a medical facility within the “critical hour.”
The “critical hour” has become a standard used to measure
the effectiveness of many components of EMS. So it is
important to take immediate action to contact 911 if you see

Natural
Disasters.
Everyone living in
the State of California should be prepared for an
earthquake. The inevitability of a damaging earthquake
confronts everyone in the Bay Area, and we are always at
risk. We do not know what will happen in the future,
but with the information we now have, we can estimate the
likelihood that something will happen. And when it
does the FFPD will be there to service our community.

Safe
Surrender Service.
The Safely Surrendered Baby Law allows a parent or
person with lawful custody to surrender a baby
confidentially, without fear of arrest or prosecution for
child abandonment. This law allows for at least a 14-day
cooling off period, which begins the day the child is
voluntarily surrendered. The SSB law requires the baby be
taken to a public or private hospital emergency room,
designated fire station or other safe surrender site. No
questions will be asked. The FFPD fire station is a
designated safe surrender site.
